There were three things that sealed the deal for me when we were about to sign on the dotted line for our new house back in February. A big kitchen oven, a massive shed and most importantly a vegie patch bathing in the sun light, fenced up to keep away unwanted visitors.
I’ve always loved gardening but havent really had much success growing vegies at the previous houses we have live in. However last Christmas I was given the book ‘One Magic Square’ by Lol Houbein. It shows how to have food plots for all seasions in temperate climates in a small space in your back garden. Getting the soil healthy was most important so I set off over the winter months digging in three types of manure from local farms, sheep, horse and cow!
Now I can’t believe how much success we have had! I followed one of the plot designs from the book – companion planting is important and it tells you what plants like sharing a bed together. We now have brocolli, carrots, spring onions, fennel, lettuce, bok choy, parsley, tomatoes and more all in a two metre square space. The best part is, because the soil is so healthy, I havent had to spray with pesticides and unnatural fertilsers. Can’t beat organic crops.
Today I wanted to show off our patch on our blog, so I asked Maya if she would like to put on a pretty dress and come and take some photos in the garden with me. The outfit and accessories you see here are all chosen by her.
We also have to thank Elizabeth from La Toriana for the amazing Play Palace. Maya just loves it, and so do the cats!
